Dynamic Axial Compression Columns

Principle of DAC compression (click here to see the animation)
Dynamic Axial Compression ensures optimum separation efficiency and consistent performance for an extended period of time.

The column includes a movable piston attached to a hydraulic jack. The piston is used to pack and unpack the column, and keep the stationary phase under dynamic (and adjustable) compression, ensuring the highest efficiency and bed stability at any scale. Together with Novasep’s unique flow distribution system, our DAC technology enables us to guarantee the same performance (plates/meter, asymmetry) from 50 mm i.d. to 2 m i.d.

For applications requiring the use of soft and/or fragile packing materials, the concept of smart piston has been developed and patented, preventing the crushing of particles or gels. The piston is automatically adjusted with the swelling or shrinkage of the stationary phase to maintain a constant compression over time.

Preparative Batch Chromatography

Principles of chromatography (click here to see the animation)
Chromatography principle is based on the equilibrium of a solution between a liquid and a solid phase.

Differences in the component affinities of a mixture with a solid stationary phase packed in a column induce different retention times of these components allowing their separation along the column.

Sequential Multi-Column Chromatography System (SMCC)

Principles of SMCC

SMCC uses the same type of stationary phase and the same separation techniques as used in any given batch process. The figure hereunder contrasts a single batch column process with a four-column SMCC process. The flow diagram shows that with SMCC, the single batch column is “sliced“ into four smaller columns. Three of the four columns are available for loading in linear sequence while the fourth column is eluted, regenerated and equilibrated. This happens asynchronously out of sequence with the continuing loading phase until it is ready to return to the linear sequence in its proper turn.

Membrane  Processes

See our Membranes technology page.
Principles of Tangential Flow Filtration

Filtration processes using membranes and Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) consist of separating dissolved or suspended elements, in relation to their molecular weight cut-off. When creating a pressure difference between retentat and permeate, the membrane acts as a filter. The substances smaller than the membrane pores are combined with the solvent, named permeate, while the larger molecules or particles are retained as retentat.
