Novasep Technologies: Membranes

A membrane is a selective permeable barrier that enables the preferential transport of matter between the two phases that it separates.
Membranes differ from dead-end filters because of the properties and structure of their constituent materials and the way they operate, but also, and most importantly, because of their filtration concept.
With membrane technology, the fluid to be treated flows tangentially to the barrier in a cross-flow pattern instead of passing through it, thus limiting the deposited materials and increasing filtration quality and performance.

Principles of Tangential Flow Filtration.

The largest molecules are retained by the membrane and removed from its surface area by the fast flow of the fluid (the retentate), while the smallest ones pass through the membrane and form the filtrate or permeate.

Benefits of Tangential Flow Filtration

  • A continuous process, easily automated
  • Requires no filter aids
  • Access to cut-offs inaccessible with other processes
  • Exclusively physical separation that does not alter the product
  • A closed system that eliminates contamination risk
  • Applicable to many industrial processes
