Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) - Prochrom® Supersep  Preparative Systems

The fastest and greenest preparative chromatography technique at small scale

Novasep pioneered preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) in the 1980’s. In a recent past, this technology has gained acceptance in the life sciences industry, due to its intrinsic performance and environmentally friendly nature.

Our solution for preparative SFC – your benefits

Time

The fastest delivery of your molecule. Our Supersep SFC systems enable the rapid purification of grams to kilograms for your compounds, and speed up the availability of your pure products for medicinal chemistry up to clinical trials. The unique automatic cleaning-in-place feature enables the fastest product changeover.

Innovation

Benefit from our team of experts!  Our technologies are continuously improved through consistent customer feedback as well as the expertise of our own custom purification teams.

Green technology

The unique CO2 recycling technology of
Prochrom® Supersep systems provides dramatic reduction of solvents and CO2 consumption. The integration of CO2  delivery and contained fraction collection systems guarantee the lowest global investment costs and the safest operation at any scale.

Principle of preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC)

Prochrom® Supersep systems enable fast, robust, environmentally friendly and efficient purifications from grams to kilograms, and up to tons for specific applications. Our SFC equipment incorporates a robust, industrial design with high performance features such as DAC (Dynamic Axial Compression) columns.

Supercritical fluid chromatography is:

  • Similar to preparative HPLC except
    • Eluent = Supercritical CO2 + Organic co-solvent
  • Very Fast
    • 3 to 5 times faster than HPLC
    • Quick isolation of the compound (CO2 vaporizes away)
  • Environmentally friendly
    • 5 to 20 times less organic solvents than for HPLC at lab to pilot scale (when solvents are not recycled)
    • CO2 recycled

For more information about SFC and when to use it, please see our chromatography technologies page.

Typical applications of preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC):

We develop SFC systems ranging from lab to industrial scale but SFC best suits medicinal chemistry and early development phase, for separation of non-polar compounds, from grams up to tens of kilograms.

Suitable for:

  • Chiral compounds separation
  • Complex mixture purification
  • Natural extract isolation

Exclusive CO2 recycling devices

CO2 recycling after solute separation is standard design for preparative SFC systems. If not, CO2 consumption would easily exceed 10 or even 20 kg of liquefied gas per hour for a preparative SFC system equipped with a 50 mm I.D. column!

Therefore, all of our Prochrom® Supersep systems are equipped with a robust and efficient CO2 recycling device that reduces the required quantities of fresh CO2 by 10 to 20 times.
