Enzymes are proteins that catalyze reactions in living organisms. They work by reducing the reaction’s energy of activation.
We have developed in-depth knowledge about biocatalysis and this technique is fully integrated into our chiral toolbox and advanced organic synthesis offering for large-scale regioselective and stereoselective reactions.
We have the experience and capabilities to perform most chemoenzymatic processes from pilot to commercial scale.
Although we do not offer enzyme development and optimization, we either scale up our customers’ enzymatic processes or work with partners specialized in enzyme screening and optimization to develop new biocatalytic steps. Thanks to our expertise in downstream processing, we are able to fully develop the purification process subsequent to the enzymatic reaction
We have recently invested in a new pilot/industrial suite dedicated to enzymatic reactions that includes a 4000 L reactor for the biocatalysis itself, two additional 4000 L work-up reactors, followed by membrane filtration and chromatography units.
For enzymatic resolution, the enzyme is combined with a racemic mixture. The enzyme will preferentially react with one of the enantiomers, leaving the other unchanged – this is an enzymatic kinetic resolution. Therefore, the resolution becomes possible and the other enantiomer can be transformed (e.g. Mitsunobu, SN2) or racemized.

Enzymatic asymmetric catalysis consists of the reaction of a prochiral molecule by an enzyme to afford a pure enantiomer of the chiral molecule.

We also use enzymes for various reactions such as aldol reaction, bio-oxidation transamination and transesterification.
