The largest molecules (or particulates in case of microfiltration) are retained by the membrane and removed from its surface by the fast flow of the fluid (the retentate), while the smallest ones pass through the membrane and form the filtrate or permeate.

A membrane is a selective permeable barrier that enables the preferential transport of matter between the two phases that it separates.
Membranes differ from dead-end filters because of the properties and structure of their constituent materials; because of the way they operate; but also, and most importantly, because of their filtration concept.
With membrane technology, the fluid to be treated flows tangentially to the barrier in a cross-flow (or tangential flow) pattern instead of passing through it, thus limiting the deposited materials and increasing filtration quality and performance.
