Cryogenic reactions

30 years of experience in cGMP, low temperature chemistry

Whether you need very low temperatures to improve the selectivity of your reaction or highly reactive compounds such has organolithium reagents, we can develop, optimize and scale-up your cryogenic reactions.

As the first CMO (Contract Manufacturing Organization) to implement low temperature reactions at commercial scale 30 years ago, we have gained a unique know-how in performing cryogenic reactions at industrial scale under cGMP.

An unrivalled range of capabilities for your cryogenic reactions

Our capabilities allow pilot and industrial scale reactions at  -80 °C in a cGMP, FDA-inspected environment:

  • Pilot scale: 215 L; 350 L; 700 L (Hastelloy)
  • Industrial scale:1,000 L; 2 x 3,000 L; 4,000 L (Hastelloy for corrosive reactions); 6,000 L (up to
  • 60 °C)
  • Reaction calorimeter to design safe processes at -80 °C

We have also recently installed a unique set of two cGMP low temperature reactors in series (3,000 L and 4,000 L) for coupling two consecutive cryogenic reactions.

The cooling system of these reactors consists of a heat-transfer fluid cooled down with liquid nitrogen.

Typical cryogenic chemistry performed

At Novasep, we can easily perform and scale up the following reactions thanks to our unique low temperature reaction offering:

  • Halogen-metal exchange (e.g. Li)
  • Li, Na metal reduction
  • Selective deprotonation and subsequent stereoselective / regioselective/ chemoselective reactions
  • Stereoselective / regioselective/ chemoselective reductions (e.g. ketones, imines, esters)
  • Asymmetric reactions (e.g. Michael addition)
  • Selective Friedel-Crafts acylation (e.g. with oxalylchloride)
